Wheels Turn Toward Healthier Communities!

The Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme is delighted to announce the launch of the Once-Off Transport Grant Scheme for 2026, in partnership with TFI Local Link Mayo. This unique funding scheme of €25,000 is designed to break down transport barriers and improve access to vital health and wellbeing services for communities experiencing higher levels of deprivation and social isolation across Mayo.

Targeting designated areas such as Erris, Achill, and Northwest Mayo, the scheme will support once-off or time-limited transport for individuals and groups participating in physical activity programmes, social prescribing, mental wellbeing initiatives and activities aimed at fostering social inclusion.

The scheme prioritises older adults at risk of isolation, individuals with chronic conditions, low-income households, and those living in remote rural areas without alternative transport options. Eligible groups can apply for transport funding for trips that directly contribute to the objectives of the Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme.

Speaking about the funding, Ms Deirdre Finnerty Head of Community Engagement, Mayo County Council said:

“We are delighted to support Local Link in the delivery of this health and wellbeing initiative under The Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme. Through collaboration with community stakeholders, this initiative will advance making community health programmes more accessible, thereby enhancing mobility and tackling social exclusion. Supporting early interventions can foster healthier behaviours and create lasting positive change. I strongly urge groups within the designated area to seize this opportunity to access transport assistance and enable rural communities to actively promote healthier lifestyles.”
