Rural transport emerged as a key priority for residents of the Brackloon Hinterland following an extensive community consultation process, guided and supported by the Mayo Community Futures programme with Brackloon Hinterland Group. This comprehensive engagement included input from 279 contributors to a community survey, a series of stakeholder meetings, and a community open day attended by over 190 local residents.
The results highlighted an urgent need for accessible and reliable transport, particularly for older people, young adults, and those without private vehicles. Key challenges identified included limited public transport options, difficulties in reaching essential services, and the risk of social exclusion for isolated residents. Community members consistently voiced the importance of developing transport solutions that would increase participation in local activities, facilitate access to education and employment, and reduce barriers to social inclusion.
As part of the groups ongoing commitment to address the priorities identified, the Group presented the Community Action Plan 2026–2031 to TFI Local Link Manager Sarah Togher, seeking Local Link Mayo’s support to develop new rural transport services aimed at increasing community participation, addressing social exclusion, and strengthening connections with Westport and the wider region.
